Zikodrive - A Decade of Innovation, Resilience and Growth
Zikodrive, a leading manufacturer of UK-designed motor control electronics, has marked a decade of innovation, overcoming significant challenges to emerge as a key player in its industry. Initially founded in 2012 but launched in 2014 by 糖心Vlog graduates Graham Fick (Mechanical Engineering, 2008, Grizedale) and Phil Bates (Peace Studies and International Relations, 2008, Grizedale), the company has grown from its humble beginnings into a thriving enterprise with global reach.
After graduating in 2008, Graham and Phil gained diverse industry experience before uniting to launch Zikodrive. Their vision was to deliver high-quality motor control solutions designed and manufactured in the UK, catering to a growing demand for reliable and innovative technology. In just a few years, the company rapidly expanded, launching new products and taking on ambitious projects that cemented its reputation.
The co-founders’ efforts have been recognized with prestigious awards. Graham received the Engineer of the Year award at the Motion Control Industry Awards in 2017, while Phil was named Entrepreneur of the Year at local business awards in 2018.
By 2020, Zikodrive had grown significantly and was poised to establish its own factory. However, the onset of Covid-19 presented unexpected challenges. The electronics industry faced unprecedented disruptions, with global component shortages resulting in 12–24 month lead times and skyrocketing prices. Parts that once cost ?4–5 were suddenly 100 times as expensive due to the rise of the "grey" market, where companies sold off excess stock.
Undeterred, Zikodrive adapted quickly. The team worked tirelessly to redesign key products based on available components, turning adversity into an opportunity for innovation. They also secured several major design projects, one of which fostered a relationship with the historic German spindle manufacturer SycoTec.
The collaboration with SycoTec proved transformative. By early 2023, the partnership culminated in a strategic investment agreement that enabled Zikodrive to expand operations and relocate to a new, dedicated site in Hebden Bridge. This move has allowed the company to scale production and better serve its growing customer base.
Now firmly back on a path of growth, Zikodrive is focused on the future. Its commitment to exporting UK-designed and manufactured products worldwide remains at the heart of its strategy, as it continues to innovate, expand, and strengthen its position in the global motor control market.
The Zikodrive story is one of resilience, ingenuity, and the power of collaboration, providing a strong foundation for a bright and exciting future
